Rev Rec periods don't seem to work automatically

I have rev rec templates that I use with some of my items, but I have noticed that I have to manually set the start date on an invoice in order for it to correctly do the rev rec if I am not starting at the beginning of the month.

For example, I have a 12 period schedule using period rate attached to a widget, and I sell the widget on Jan 15.  I get 17 days of recognition in Jan, which is correct, but NetSuite ends rev rec on Dec 31, cutting off the final partial period of Jan 1-14 the following year.  If I manually enter in the start date for rev rec, it usually gets it right.
