Import Monthly Sales Totals...as Items?

We would like to import (monthly) sales totals by customer for use in KPIs and management reports.   Since we're still invoicing and handling accounting in a legacy system (we're a marine transportation company with complex tariff-based rates), we don't currently utilize items, but would like summarized numbers in NS.

Alternatives considered include importing (CSV):
  - as fulfilled sales order (monthly totals)
  - into custom fields on customer records

Both seem to have shortcomings, so we're open to advice.
