Linking the inventory counts of 2 items

Does anyone know of a way to link the inventory count of a subitem ? Assuming you had item A, I make subitem A1.. I want orders for subitem A1 to have the same inventory count as item A, so when you sell item A1 it deducts inventory from item A.. If that makes sense:) Maybe a KIT could do this.. Any thoughts appreciated.
