MLI and Quantity Backordered

So here's my scenario...

I've got multi-location turned on.  I create a sales order with an item on it (and there is none of that item on hand) and on the sales order I don't select a company/location.  When I view the item record, the item does not have a backordered quantity even though it should.  But if I associate that sales order with a location then the item has a backordered quantity.  So it looks like you need to select a company/location for the sales order in order to see the quantity backordered.  But what if I have multiple sales orders with no
