Changing COGS Account at Item Level

I have incorrectly setup an inventory item to the wrong COGS account.  But when I try to change it to the correct one, I get a message that I cannot change the G/L impact of a transaction in a closed period.  How do I fix this so that future transactions post to the correct account?
