Difference between SALES ORDER and INVOICE ???

We are working on cleaning up some billing issues and have been told to use the "Invoice" for handling credits, accepting multiple CC, etc...we currently use the Sales Order template to take and fulfill product orders...soooo, we need to know what the difference is between a Sales Order and an Invoice.  Please HELP!
