Using fax number for e-mail

We have received many positive comments from our customers concerning the auto e-mail feature notifying them that shipments have been fulfilled.  We have many older customer without e-mail addresses.  I thought I had a bright idea and have tried to notify these customers by putting their fax number in the e-mail field as follows: 18645551212@faxaway.com.  This does not seem to work.  Has anyone else tried this and does anyone know why it does not work?  Thanks.
