reconciled balance does not match register balance

I just finished reconciling the 2008 fiscal year for Dec 31 2008.

all the transactions matched up perfectly in the reconciliation screen and the Dec 31 2008 reconciled balance was correct and all the open transactions were cleared and reconciled.

however, the register for this same bank account shows only 1/10 the actual balance and not the reconciled amount. there are no uncleared transactions appearing in the account.

any ideas ?
