Prevent users or roles from editing past transactions

Does anyone know how I can prevent either direct users or roles from the ability to edit say a Sales Order after it has been invoiced?

The problem is our sales team currently can go back in time and adjust a sales order after it has been shipped and invoiced and I need a way to limit or prevent this.
