Can we Assign Department Numbers?

Our CFO wants to know if we can assign department number values as opposed to Alpha values....

Obviously we could simply enter numbers into the 'department name' alpha/number field, but we are wondering if we could have:

Number:Name

ie: 600:Sales

The motivation is that this would make it faster during data entry. Does anybody else know if this is doable?
