Modify <NLTOTAL> on expense report email?

I have a request from our accounting department.  When sending an email from an expense report, the <NLTOTAL> field is displayed as a negative number.  While this may be technically correct, it's confusing for the recipient.

It seems like my options for customizing these email templates are limited.

Any suggestions for removing the - or changing the field?
