Updating Item Record with New Matrix Option

I'm not sure if I'm missing something simple but I have created new Matrix Options for Child Matrix Inventory Items and I want to perform a CSV load to update the items appropriately. I have received an error from the load saying that "You do not have permissions to set a value for element matrixoptioncustitem_itemstyletype due to one of the following reasons: 1) The field is read-only; 2) An associated feature is disabled; 3) The field is available either when a record is created or updated, but not in both cases."

Am I not able to update the items with the new Matrix options once the record has been created or is there a specific way I have to go about doing this?
