Populating Field on SO to Item Fulfillment

I have been trying to get a field (Customer PO#) that we have on our sales order form to populate to the item fulfillment once it is created.  We cannot seem to get this and do this sort of thing all the time.  Is it not working because its not possible to populate from an SO to an item fulfillment? Does anyone have any idea?
