Bill Payments and Check Numbers

We make bill payments but do not always use a check.  It seems to me that in the past we would just clear the "To Be Printed" box on the bill payment.  However when we do that and save the transaction - the box rechecks itself and the bill payment goes to the check queue.  Any suggestions?  Has something changed?
