Change to 3rd Party Processor- Experience?

After a crash course in the world of payment gateways and processors, it looks like we are going to see significant savings by moving to a 3rd party processor for credit card transactions.  Has anyone gone through this or undertaken obtaining level 2/3 classification by passing additional fields at the time of authentication? If you have experience making these changes, I would love to connect and get some lessons learned.
