Question about basic billing

I have a quick question - I am trying to go back to basics when it comes to billing (we have been using advanced billing & shipping for a while now)

If I were to go back to basic billing, do invoices get sent out automatically once an item on the order is fulfilled?
If so, is the entire order invoiced, or just the items that were fulfilled?

We do a lot of partial shipments, and we can't invoice an entire sales order if we have only shipped one of the line items.
