Discount Item - APPLY BEFORE SALES TAX

Hello,

I'm looking for the business use cases for checking on/off the "Apply Before Sales Tax". 

I'm working in an environment where I've tested two discount items where one applies the discount after sales tax, and the other applies it before sales tax.

They are both giving me the same total and tax impact.  The math seemingly checks out.  But the question is, is this checkbox meant for processes more advanced than simple discounts on sales orders?
