Tax Exempt Customer...Except for certain items

We have a situation in certain states where we have customers that are generally tax-exempt for the items they buy and resell from us.  However, we have a software service that we sell them that is still taxable even to those otherwise exempt customers.  Is there any built-in way to handle this?  Or any ideas on the best way to implement?
