Amortization without going through AP/AR?

We use Items to create amortization schedules for things like prepaid maintenance, deferred COS items, etc - when they come through AP invoices.

Is it possible to create amortization schedules from a journal entry (i.e. not through invoices)?

We have many balances that came from non-AP items...like acquired intangibles that were the result of a business combination.
We have to manually track the amortization in excel, and record a journal entry every month.

If we could somehow get them into an amortization schedule, we could potentially eliminate dozens of manual journal entries every month.

I found the old thread below which seemed to suggest it could be done, however with no follow up or instruction on how to...
