Journal Entries and thier impact on P&L

I'm a Developer by trade that has entered the dark side of Accounting...

I know that when you edit the debit/credit amounts in an already existing Journal Entry it immediately impacts the Chart of Accounts and Balance Sheet.
How come it doesn't immediately impact the P&L??
