Not able to save Credit Memo because of inventory detail

I'm trying to create a credit memo from an invoice but it's not allowing me to save because it says I need to enter the inventory detail on one of the line items. The line item is a serialized inventory item but this sales order/invoice was never fulfilled and doesn't have the inventory detail on the sales order or invoice. So I don't know why it's asking me to fill out the inventory detail on the credit memo. What do I do in this case? Any suggestions on what's the best practice?
