Newbie blues: can't do simple CSV import

Made a CSV file from an Excel spreadsheet using the Leads template. Checked it with BBEdit, and it looks okay. Import fails with error "The CSV file contained illegal characters."

Tried saving it as "CSV (Windows)". Still fails. "CSV (MS-DOS)" file also fails. Tried it with a one-record test file. Still fails.

What am I doing wrong? Platform is Safari browser on Mac OS X.
