CSV item Import

I've imported 2 csv files this morning. First one had 51 items - had no problem. 2nd csv import had 350 items. I get "An unexpected error has occurred" on the 2nd import.
Number of records imported: 168
Number of records failed: 182

So I took the failed records only and imported then (the remaining 182) and I get an error again
Number of records imported: 168
Number of records failed: 14

Why is it that I can only import only 168 records at a time? I have done item imports many times with records in the 1000s, as recently as last month, and had no problems. I used the exact saved import template each time.
