Duplicate Transaction Numbers

I am new to this forum, so pardon any newbie faux pas.
We are operating in a Mac environment, using Firefox and have been using NS for 4 years.
We have all of our users' preferences set up to receive duplicate number warnings, and I have seen this work, when more than one user is entering credit memos simultaneously, NS will tell them that they are using a duplicate number. Unfortunately this doesn't seem to be working with our AR sales orders and item fulfillments. We use automatically generated SO and IF numbers and then use the IF number as our Invoice # as well (for tracibility, since NS doesn't link these transactions
