Sales report by kit member

I am trying to find a way to generate a report on the sales of a kit that include a particular member item.  In other words, I want to know how many of KIT1 were sold during the month which contained MEMBER1

I can't just figure out which kits contain MEMBER1 and run the sales report for those items because periodically (a couple of times per year) MEMBER2 will replace MEMBER1 in KIT1 and I want to track the exact number of kits that actually contained MEMBER1 when they were fulfilled.

So what I need is a typical sales report by item that shows the total revenue for the item (the kit) but only shows the items that have MEMBER1 as a component.  By the way, I want it to show this information only for items on closed invoices.  It seems like all the pertinent iformation is captured by NS but I can't find a way to tease it out.
