credit card pre-authorizations

We have been getting a lot of complaints from people that the bank is still holding their pre-auth after we have charged their card, causing it to appear that we have double billed them.  Does anyone else have this problem?  Do you know how we can stop this from happening?  I don't want people to be getting overdraft charges or to be over their limit due to it appearing that we have charged them twice.  It makes us look bad and makes customers angry.
