closing transactions after Peoplesoft integration

My business unit relys upon a corporate integration into Peoplesoft billing and Corporate level accounts receivable.  Therefore, we do not finally close out transactions.
Is there a downside to this practice?  I assume a custom script could be applied to batch-process close transactions on a month basis.
