AR entry but bill paid in full?

I am trying to clean up the Accounts Receivable Report and have found a number of cases where the AR report shows an outstanding amount but when I drill down to the underlying invoice it says 'paid in full' . How could a bill that is 'paid in full' appear on the AR report? Any help welcome ....
