Subtotal the Previous Subtotals

Is there anyway other than scripting to subtotal all previous subtotals. For example we would like to show:

-Item 1
-Item 2
-Subtotal of Item 1 and Item 2
-Item 3
-Item 4
-Subtotal of Item 3 and Item 4
*-Subtotal of Items 1,2,3,4
-Item 6 (Markup or discount item)
