sending invoices as pdf attachment upon save

We need to send our invoices out as pdfs.  Currently the system sends everything as html, imbedded in an email to the customer contact when we complete the invoice. 

I see there are preferences in the HOME area, "Email using HTML" is unchecked.  I have tried other tweeks, thinking it will work, but it always sends invoice as html.  No one wants the invoice as html, I don't know why that is even an option.

How to we standardize on PDF invoicing?  Do we have to change a setting on each customer record?
