Returning an item that was sold at a discount

Can someone humour me please?
I've recently joined a company that uses many promotion codes. I want to be sure that when a return authorisation is created for an item that was sold at a discount, that the discounted price is refunded and not the full price.
Does this happen automatically or do you have to do it manually?
