Returning an Applied payment

Here is the issue. We have a customer invoice for $400. We applied a $20 payment to that invoice. We then returned that payment thru NetSuite as a credit memo (and processed the customer credit back thru the credit card). The problem is that the credit went to the sales account, and the the customer balance is still $380. Any thoughts?>>>>
