Contract Renewals + AvaTax = Address Problems on Renewal Transactions

Hi all,

I'm hoping someone can help me figure this out.

Customer uses Contract Renewals module as well as AvaTax.  AvaTax does a tax-code lookup and works its "magic" based on the ship-to address on a transaction.  No issue here on NEW transactions. 
On renewal transactions, we need to copy the "ship to address" from the original transaction to the renewal transaction via the "Install Base Field Mappings" functionality that's included in the Contract Renewals module.  This functionality uses a script to copy user-defined field values from original SO to renewal transaction.  It's very useful for MOST fields.

Our problem is as follows:
