VAT Codes

I'm very confused about the difference VAT Codes RC-GB and ESSS.
I have been using ESS for sales of our services to VAT registered customers in EU countries.  these sales appear on our Quarterly EC sales List
We now have a Polish subsidiary and they have asked me to use the RC code for invoices as this states "customer to pay output tax"  but these sales will not appear on our EC sales return.

What is the difference?
