Auto generated customer number sequence by subsidiary

We need a separate number sequence for customers in each subsidiary. The default is only one number sequence for all subsidiaries. We also want customers numbered separately from prospects, or prospects not numbered since we don't care.
We have a specific use for the customer number in that it becomes a software license number.
Alternatively using a custom field that can be auto generated would also work.
