Join on custom field

Hi -

Is it possible to preform a join on a custom field?  For example, we have a custom field on our invoices which references an employee in charge of supporting the client.  Is there any way I can pull up information about said employee using a join, or will I have to do a separate field lookup?  As of right now, I'm getting an invalid join error when trying to use the custom field, so I'm guessing no, but perhaps there's something I'm missing or a workaround I haven't considered...
