How to get "Last Modified" field value of a Custom Record?

Hi,

I have a custom record and I need to get the value of the field "Last Modified" using the clientscript.

nlapiGetFieldValue("lastmodified");   used to work fine one month back..but now its not working.Any ideas?
    
In the reference guide it shows           
Record Type  :customrecord*
Field Name     :lastmodified
Label            :Last Modified
Field Type     : date
