v2007: how to add line breaks to addrtext on customer records

i have a server script that cleans up addresses and updates the addrtext field on the address line items on customer records - ie the field that shows the complete address ready for a mailmerge

how should i add a line break between lines in addrtext? Using a <br> tag seems to work, but only until another server script loads and saves the record, when the <br> tags are stripped out. Using \n doesn't seem to work, nor .

any ideas ?
