accessing line items for custom records via SuiteScript

How do I find the "group" name for a custom record (within a parent client record) so I can access it via SuiteScript with the following calls on a record:
* getLineItemCount(group)
* getLineItemValue(group, i)

(i.e. within an Entity Record, the Attendees list's group name is "attendee" (singular) - how to find group name for custom record list?)

more details: am trying to access this "Before Load" of a User Event server SuiteScript - will this be possible?
