Problem with nlapiMergeTemplate

I am trying to use this function to mail merge a template that requires the sales rep information and the contact name for a lead.  So I am passing the function a lead and a contact record.  It appears that the altType and altId fields are not used.  Only the record passed in for baseType and baseId work.  If I pass in the lead record as the baseId and the contact as the altId, then only the lead fields are resolved in the mail merge.  If I pass in the contact record as the baseId and the lead as the
