Mergining email templates with nlapiMergeTemplate

I've noticed that the help shows that nlapiMergeTemplate accepts a parameter fields as its 6th argument.  However, it isn't really clear how this fields is used.  Is this a hash of fields and values to be merged in?

Will someone give an example of how this is used?
