Portlet Parameter Issue

I am displaying the results of a search (after some filtering) in a portlet.
I want to be able to set a start date which I have set up as a parameter and its on the portlet (under edit).

I try to get the value of this field using
startdate = portlet.getSetting('SCRIPT','custscript_startdate');

I get this error

Function: diaryVisualisation Error: UNEXPECTED_ERROR TypeError: Cannot find function getSetting. (diaryVisualisation#35) Stack Trace:

but the manual says

nlapiGetContext().getSetting(‘SCRIPT’, ‘custscript_parameterName’);

I can't see what I am doing wrong - any guidance ?
