nlapiDisableField() has no effect on a SuiteLet

I'm pretty sure I'm using this method correctly...

 nlapiSetFieldValue(PAT_ASSESS_FLD.COMMENTS, 'value changed', false);  nlapiDisableField(PAT_ASSESS_FLD.COMMENTS, true);


To prove I have the field ID correct I added the call to nlapiSetFieldValue().
The call to nlapiDisableField() has no effect.
