setAmountField method

I have been playing around with this method, but seem to be missing something.

My script has this :
sublist.setAmountField('signedamount');

which is the field i want to sum, however, no total column appears on the form, and i have tried adding a total column (with id 'total') to the form with no success (regarding it being updated')

Any pointers from anyone?
