Please help me do a simple copy...

at least it should be simple. We had a custom transaction column field for "item specifications". We are just starting to try and track inventory and assembly items and I found out that the item specifications field will not show or print on a work order or bill of material. I tried everything, including asking support for the reason. We went through many steps to troubleshoot and it was determined that I'd have to create a new item option, if this field is to follow the item through the processes.
I did this. Now my challenge is trying to populate the new item option field with the old Item Specifications field values. I've just about pulled my hair out, trying to find a way to do this. I can't mass update as the fields are not available. I can't export/import because the import wizard wants to overwrite too many fields. All i want to do is do a mass copy of the old field into the new field then remove the old field. PLEASE HELP!! I would really appreciate any help in this area. I've read about smbXML, scripting, imports
