nlapiRequestURL

I have a requirement to use nlapiRequestURL to send an xml request and access a url.
But when I try to access the url, I get an error stating
“An untrusted, unsupported, or invalid certificate was found for this host.”
They have a self signed public certificate. Can I use nlapiRequestURL in this case?
