Outstanding A/R Notification

I would like to have an alert pop up to notify our reps that a customer has an outstanding balance (and perhaps even what it is) when viewing a customer record.

I know that this can be accomplished with scripting, but know little to nothing about the steps to make it work. 

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
