nlapiRequestURL's response XML

I am posting data through nlapiRequestURL and the reponse I get back is XML. By using response.getbody(), I could only get the data inside XML with out the XML Nodes, attributes, etc.

How can I retain the XML structure in the response (i.e get the XML response with the nodes, elements, etc)?
