Detached authentication: howto and best practice?

Assume I have a suitelet with anonymous login (Available without login in the deployment), but I would like a way to authenticate the user.  I want to either develop a form, or use an external service (RESTful, OAuth, etc.), where the user would enter Netsuite (Contact) credentials and I could determine whether or not they had successfully authenticated.

How would you go about that?
