Open Case in Second Tab When Customer is Opened

I am thinking this is possible (maybe even easy) but can't seem to find a way to do it.

In certain roles, I am trying to automatically open a new case record for a customer whenever the customer record is opened for editing. The new case record can be in a new tab or a new window - it just needs to share the same session so that one window doesn't get logged out. I think the tab vs. window issue is determined by browser settings anyway.

Is this possible?
